Vacations
Mike Haberman
As summer nears and the end of school looms many employees will be taking summer vacations. Surveys conducted last year show that the U.S. significantly lags much of the rest of the world in the amount of vacation allowed and taken. A study by Hewitt Associates showed that, while 96% of US employers offer at least 10 days of vacation, the majority of other countries in the world mandate at least 20 days and several mandate 30 or more days.

In most U.S. companies the amount of vacation time is tied to the amount of time an employee has been with the company. In order to accrue the amount of time most European workers receive in their first year most American workders have to be with their companies 10, 15, or even 20 years. Given the state of employee mobility in today's economy very few employees will ever reach that amount of vacation. Many employees make up for this by taking time between job changes.

Another vacation phenomenom deals with the number of American workers that never take vacation. A poll conducted by VacationCoach.com indicated that as many as 20 percent of polled adults NEVER take vacation. Another survey, by Anderson Consulting, reported that the majority of workers, taking more than seven days of vacation, remained in contact with their offices while gone.

Study after study indicate that the lack of time away from the office has a significant effect on productivity. Personal experience probably tells many of us the same thing. Take a look at your company. Are people taking time off? Are you allowing them enough time off? Is the work structured to allow them to take time off without constantly checking into the office? Is productivity suffering due to "burnout" and lack of enthusiasm?

The renewal that people achieve as a result of extended time away from the office can pay dividends for the company in increased productivity, increase creativity and the increased vitality of your employees. Try it, you will find out.

Just some to think about as you lay on the beach this summer.
